Nolan is always around, so eventually I had to paint him. He’s retro rock ’n’ roll in this mugshot, which makes me laugh, because he’s so NOT a bad boy. I don’t think he’s ever even shoplifted.

I consider the fifties an idealized version of America. Happy Days, Grease, James Dean, Hot Rods. There is iconic innocence to a time where the worst thing a teenager could do was race cars down abandoned streets, or drink a little too much and lose their virginity. This portrait is a tribute to the faded memory of a misspent youth.
I’m a writer living in Los Angeles, making emojis of faces I find on Instagram. When I get a moment, I paint portraits on canvases I build from reclaimed wood.
